For this project, our team was responsible for:
Assessment and Planning:
We began by conducting a thorough evaluation of the pathway’s location and structure, taking into account the adjacent garden bed and building. Our planning focused on ensuring that the removal process would not damage the garden or affect the building’s foundation, while also addressing safety hazards and disposal requirements.
Concrete Pathway Removal:
Using specialised equipment, including concrete saws and hydraulic breakers, we carefully removed the concrete pathway. On the garden side, we worked to minimise any disturbance to the plants and soil. On the building side, we ensured that the removal was done with precision to avoid any structural damage to the building’s foundation or nearby features.
Waste Management and Recycling:
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we separated recyclable materials from waste, ensuring the concrete was processed for reuse or recycling. This effort contributed to our goal of reducing landfill waste and supporting eco-friendly practices.
Challenges and Solutions
Concrete pathway removal often presents unique challenges, and this project was no exception:
Working Around Sensitive Areas:
On one side of the pathway, a garden bed was located, requiring us to take extra care not to damage the plants or disturb the soil. We used protective barriers and carefully manoeuvred our equipment to limit any impact on the garden. On the other side, the pathway ran against a building, so we had to ensure the removal process was done with great precision to avoid any damage to the building’s foundation.
Dust and Debris Management:
Concrete removal generates dust, especially in tight spaces. To mitigate this, we used dust suppression techniques such as water spraying to keep the area clean and safe for the campus community. We also managed debris carefully to avoid contamination of the nearby garden or building areas.
